Arsenal interested in signing West Ham star Fernandes

By on April 8, 2026

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, as per Caught Offside.

After joining Southampton from Sporting CP in 2024, the 21-year-old showed glimpses of his qualities in the Premier League last term, even though he failed to help his side secure their top-flight status.

Having been impressed by the Portuguese, the Hammers decided to purchase him by spending a hefty fee last summer, and he has found himself in a similar situation this season as last term.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have been languishing in the relegation scrap, but Fernandes has displayed promising performances, making seven goal contributions in 31 appearances across all competitions.

The midfielder’s recent eye-catching performances earned him a call-up to the Portugal national team during the March international break.

Now, Caught Offside claim that after being attracted by Fernandes, several top Premier League clubs have registered their interest in signing him.

Arsenal are interested in him and could make a concrete approach to seal the deal during the offseason. Moreover, Manchester City are in this race as well.

Fernandes to Arsenal

However, Liverpool have made the most concrete approach to finalise the operation as they have already held talks with the player’s representatives over a potential summer swoop.

Having recently moved to the London Stadium, he still has a contract until 2030. So, the East London club have no intention of parting ways with him but are resigned to losing him, regardless of whether they stay in the Premier League.

If West Ham are eventually forced to cash-in on him in the upcoming summer transfer window, they have slapped a £55m price tag on his head.

Fernandes is a versatile player as he is comfortable playing in the defensive midfield and box-to-box roles. Furthermore, he can provide cover in the creative midfield position if needed.

The West Ham star is quick, technically sound, has an eye for scoring goals from distance, and is also efficient in defensive contributions. He is still very young and isn’t a finished article yet.

So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services.
