Arsenal ready to make Piero Hincapié’s loan deal permanent
Arsenal are reportedly preparing to sign Piero Hincapié permanently in the summer, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Following Jakub Kiwior’s departure, the Gunners decided to sign the Ecuadorian on loan from Bayer Leverkusen during the final stages of the summer transfer window to strengthen the left side of their defence.
Initially, the 24-year-old took time to settle into his new surroundings and played as a deputy to Riccardo Calafiori. However, amid the Italian’s fitness problems in recent months, Hincapié has established himself as an integral part of Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up.
In 27 appearances across all competitions, the South American has made two goal contributions and kept four clean sheets this term. Moreover, he has been helping his side to challenge on all fronts.
Now, on X, Romano states that Arsenal will turn Hincapié’s loan deal permanent in the summer and are set to pay around £45m, while the German side will have a 10% sell-on clause.
The North London club couldn’t sign Hincapié permanently last summer due to FFP regulations, having already splashed big money. So, they opted to go for this structure as they did with David Raya previously.
Romano wrote:
“Arsenal will turn Piero Hincapié deal into permanent in June, never in doubt. Deal was structured on initial loan for FFP reasons but always seen as permanent, similar to Raya deal in the past. Fee to Bayer Leverkusen from AFC: €52m plus 10% sell-on clause.”
Hincapié to Arsenal
Mikel Arteta likes having versatile players at his disposal, and Hincapié is one of them, as although he is a left-footed centre-back by trait, he is also comfortable in the left-back position.
The South American has mainly played as a left-back at the Emirates Stadium this season, but has also deputised for Gabriel Magalhaes at times.
Having proven his worth in club football, Hincapié has secured his place in the Ecuadorian national team’s starting line-up and is set to be a key player for his country in this summer’s World Cup.
Meanwhile, following a hard-fought victory over Mansfield Town in the FA Cup fifth round, the North London club are set to face Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League last 16 first leg on Wednesday before taking on Everton in the Premier League next weekend.
