Arsenal are reportedly ‘preparing’ to accelerate their efforts to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, as per TEAMtalk.

The 25-year-old moved to St James’ Park from AC Milan in 2023. However, he failed to serve his club properly during his debut campaign, as he was suspended after being found guilty of breaching the betting regulations.

Upon returning, the Italian showcased his qualities last term, helping his side win the Carabao Cup. This was the Magpies’ first major trophy win in almost seven decades.

Moreover, he guided them to qualify for the Champions League, making nine goal contributions in 45 appearances across all competitions.

This season, he has continued to prove his worth, helping Eddie Howe’s side reach the Champions League last 16. He has already matched last season’s goal contribution tally.

However, speculation surrounding his future has started to emerge, with the Gunners heavily linked with a move during the final stages of the winter transfer window.

Now, TEAMtalk claim that Arsenal held talks to learn about the details of signing him in January but eventually failed to seal the deal. Still, they remain the ‘most fervent admirers’ of the Italian international.

Tonali to Arsenal

Arsenal are ‘preparing’ to make a push to sign Tonali in the summer as they believe he would be an ‘ideal’ fit to play in Mikel Arteta’s system, with Andrea Berta a ‘keen advocate’ of his compatriot.

The player’s representatives were spotted at the Emirates Stadium during recent matches, suggesting both parties have already opened talks over the deal.

However, the report state that Manchester United are also interested in Tonali as a potential replacement for Casemiro, who is set to leave as a free agent.

Juventus are in this race as well, and the player would be open to returning to Serie A, but the Bianconeri can’t afford to finalise the operation amid their financial difficulties.

Newcastle have slapped a whopping £85m price tag on his head, with his existing deal set to run until 2029. Although Howe’s side have no intention of letting him leave, they might be forced to sell a few stars this summer if they fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Apart from Arsenal, Man Utd & Juventus, Real Madrid have been monitoring his development closely before making a potential summer swoop.
