Mikel Arteta provides injury update on Leandro Trossard & Riccardo Calafiori
Arsenal have been dealt a fresh double injury scare after Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori were forced off in the FA Cup tie against Mansfield Town on Saturday.
Although five points clear of the relegation zone in EFL League One, the Stags put Mikel Arteta’s side under early pressure. Nevertheless, Arsenal found the breakthrough before half-time as Noni Madueke fired the Gunners in front.
The key moment came when Eberechi Eze scored, allowing Arsenal to overcome a resilient Mansfield side and continue their push for silverware on four fronts.
Mansfield started aggressively, registering 11 shots in the first half. It was the most attempts Arsenal had faced in the opening 45 minutes of any competition since 2022, but the North London side still secured the win.
Trossard started in an attack-minded Arsenal line-up on Saturday afternoon as Mikel Arteta chose to rest Viktor Gyökeres, Eze, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi.
Double injury blow
The Belgian’s game, however, ended shortly before half-time at One Call Stadium. Trossard went down, causing concern for the Arsenal medical staff, who treated him before helping him up, after which he was substituted for Piero Hincapié.
Later in the second half, Calafiori showed discomfort in his right hamstring and was quickly replaced by Jaden Dixon, who made his Gunners debut after joining from Stoke City during the January transfer window.
After the win, Arteta said both players had ‘little niggles’ and did not feel comfortable continuing.
He said: ‘Both of them, they had little niggles; they weren’t comfortable to continue.’
‘And we knew that this could be a possibility, especially in the conditions that we’re playing today. So, we have to take them off.’
Calafiori only recently returned to action after a muscle problem that had sidelined him for 10 matches.
Arsenal still have a demanding run of fixtures ahead before the March international break. The North London side are set to face Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, with the two legs scheduled around a Premier League home encounter against Everton.
Following those matches, Arsenal will travel to Wembley Stadium on 22 March to contest the EFL Cup final against Manchester City.
