Arsenal register interest in Hertha Berlin midfielder Kennet Eichhorn
Arsenal have expressed interest in signing highly rated Hertha Berlin defensive midfielder Kennet Eichhorn, according to Christian Falk via CF Bayern Insider.
In August, Eichhorn surpassed Efe-Kaan Sihlaroglu to become the youngest ever player in Germany’s second division after debuting against Karlsruher SC at 16 years and 14 days.
Current Copenhagen and former Borussia Dortmund prodigy Youssoufa Moukoko still holds the record for the youngest-ever debutant across Germany’s top two divisions, having featured just a few days after his 16th birthday.
A month after Eichhorn’s debut, the defensive midfielder etched his name into German football history books by becoming the youngest starter in Bundesliga 2 after being handed a starting berth in Berlin’s matchday five clash against Hannover 96, and he has not looked back since then.
The youngster has gone on to make 12 appearances for Stefan Leitl’s side, with ten of those being starts, while also starting in the club’s two games in the DFB-Pokal before an unfortunate injury in January halted his momentum.
According to CF Bayern Insider, Arsenal are looking to reinforce their midfield next summer and have already expressed ‘strong interest’ in Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka.
The report adds that the Premier League table toppers are also keeping an eye on promising prospects, with Eichhorn now piquing their interest.
Exciting prospect
However, the Gunners are set to face stern competition for the German midfield as Christian Falk, via CF Bayern Insider, claims that Manchester United have earmarked him as a possible midfield option, while Bayern Munich have shown a ‘concrete interest’ in the 16-year-old as a possible successor to Goretzka.
Since the appointment of Andrea Berta as sporting director, Arsenal have now just focused on adequate first-team reinforcements but also a youth-driven recruitment policy that has seen several exciting prospects move to the Emirates Stadium.
They recently signed talented Colombian twins Edwin and Holger Quintero, while highly rated Stoke City centre-back Jaden Dixon and St Mirren striker Evan Mooney joined before the winter transfer deadline.
Eichhor, valued at £17m by Transfermarkt, would be a good addition to the Gunners’ ranks, as he possesses immense technical qualities that suit the possession-based style accustomed to the club.
Standing at 6ft 1in, the Germany U17 international is a combative tackler and relentless ball winner, and those qualities could prove useful to Mikel Arteta should the club secure a deal for his signature ahead of other rivals.
