Arsenal have reportedly held talks to sign Athletic Club forward Nico Williams, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The 23-year-old came into the spotlight having displayed impressive performances during the 2023/24 season, making 24 goal contributions across all competitions.

He won the Copa del Rey and even helped Spain win the European Championship in 2024, defeating England in the final. However, the youngster hasn’t been able to reach the same level since.

This season, he has struggled with fitness problems, making seven goal contributions in 26 appearances in all tournaments. Meanwhile, Athletic Club have been displaying inconsistent performances, languishing in mid-table.

Now, Fichajes state that despite Williams’ recent struggles, Arsenal are keen on signing him to reinforce the left flank. They have been monitoring his development closely and have already made contact to learn about the details of signing him.

Williams recently signed a new contract until 2035 and has a £87m release clause. The forward is even tempted by the prospect of moving to the Premier League.

The Gunners hold a long-term interest in the Spain international, and it remains to be seen whether they make a move to finally sign him in the summer.

Williams to Arsenal

Arsenal currently have Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard as the left flank options. However, the Brazilian has netted only once in the Premier League thus far this season, although he has showcased his productivity in cup competitions.

On the other hand, the Belgian hasn’t been able to showcase consistency this season. So, the North London club could do with upgrading the left flank in the summer.

Although Williams hasn’t been at his best in recent seasons, he is still very young and has plenty of time on his side to turn his situation around. He is quick, technically sound, capable of dribbling past defenders in tight areas, and clinical in front of goal.

So, the Spaniard would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him for a reasonable fee.

Meanwhile, following a disappointing 2-2 draw against Wolves in midweek, Arsenal will face off against arch-rival Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this weekend before taking on Chelsea next month.
