Arsenal in fierce battle to sign Atletico Madrid’s Alvarez

By on February 19, 2026

Arsenal are reportedly in a fierce battle to sign Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, as per Spanish outlet Sport.

After moving to the Estadio Metropolitano from Manchester City in 2024, the 26-year-old enjoyed a stellar debut campaign, scoring 29 goals and registering seven assists across all competitions.

However, he has struggled to replicate last season’s form thus far this season. He failed to find the back of the net in 11 consecutive matches before overcoming his goal drought vs Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-final last week.

Now, Sport report that despite his recent inconsistent performances, the forward’s stock remains high in the Premier League, with Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea all keen to sign him.

The Gunners hold a long-term interest in the Argentinian as they attempted to buy him last summer and launched a £104m bid. However, after Atletico Madrid decided to reject the proposal, they signed Viktor Gyokeres to reinforce the frontline.

The report state that Alvarez prefers to join Barcelona if he were to leave Los Rojiblancos. However, Los Rojiblancos have no intention of parting ways with him and have already offered him a fresh term, although his existing deal is set to run until 2030.

Alvarez is a centre-forward by trait but is also comfortable in the second striker role. Moreover, Diego Simeone has used him on the flanks at times this season.

Alvarez to Arsenal

He previously showcased his qualities in the Premier League during his time with Man City, winning two Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and several other cup competitions. Moreover, he has won two Copa Americas and a World Cup with Argentina.

Arsenal currently have Viktor Gyokeres, Gabriel Jesus, and Kai Havertz as striker options. However, the German has continued to struggle with fitness problems, while Jesus has been linked with a move away.

Alvarez, valued at around £87m by Transfermarkt, has proven his worth at the highest level and would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services in the summer.
