Arsenal join race to sign Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi
Arsenal have reportedly entered the race to sign Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.
The Gunners have reinforced the defensive department by signing Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié this summer. The Ecuadorian has joined on an initial loan from Bayer Leverkusen with an obligation to make the move permanent next summer.
Mikel Arteta’s side have been solid defensively over the last few years and have started the new season strongly as well, conceding only one in four Premier League games. It was even a long-range free-kick goal by Dominik Szoboszlai of Liverpool.
Mosquera has started his life at the Emirates Stadium promisingly. However, Fichajes state that Arsenal are still looking to add further depth to the centre-back position and have registered their interest in Guehi.
The Englishman has entered the final few months of his current contract and was very close to joining Liverpool on deadline day in the recently concluded summer window. However, the move eventually fell through.
The Reds are still keen on purchasing him and are even considered the frontrunners in this race. Apart from them, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Barcelona are also plotting a swoop.
Guehi to Arsenal
Arsenal are set to monitor the 25-year-old’s situation at Selhurst Park closely before making a potential swoop next year. He has made it clear that he isn’t going to sign an extension with the Eagles, so he is set to become a free agent next summer.
Foreign clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona can even manage to sign the defender, valued at around £39m by Transfermarkt, on a pre-contract agreement in January.
William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes have established themselves as the undisputed starter in Arsenal’s centre-back position in recent years. On the other hand, Mosquera has started showcasing that he is capable of providing cover for the Frenchman.
Hincapié and Riccardo Calafiori are left-footed centre-backs and can support Gabriel when needed. So, ideally, Arsenal don’t need a new defender as they are already well-stocked in this position.
However, considering a player of Guehi’s quality is set to become available for free, Arsenal shouldn’t let go of an opportunity like this to secure his service.
