Pundit questions Arsenal’s decision not to sign Marc Guehi
Former forward turned pundit Paul Merson has questioned Arsenal’s decision not to pursue Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi
The Gunners finished second in the Premier League in the last three consecutive campaigns, so they are desperate to finally become the English champions after more than two decades.
They have reinforced the squad by signing Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze, and Piero Hincapié.
To secure eight new players’ services, the North London club have spent more than £270m. Hincapié has joined on an initial loan deal with an obligation to make the move permanent next summer.
However, on Sky Sports (via the Metro), Merson questions Arsenal’s decision not to make a move for Guehi, although they have signed two new centre-backs this summer.
The ex-Gunner is even surprised that, other than Liverpool, no other club made a move to purchase him in the recently concluded window, even though he was available at a cut-price deal.
The forward has entered the final year of his current contract and has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield throughout the summer. However, he has not refused to play for the Eagles, and Merson praises his professionalism.
Arsenal’s transfer decision questioned
Merson said:
“I think he’s a brilliant player, I really do think he’s a brilliant centre-half. It blows my mind that it’s just Liverpool [that are interested]. He gets into everybody’s team in my opinion. People might say at Arsenal he won’t get in at the moment because of the two [Saliba and Gabriel], but he’s a great replacement.
“I know he might want to play, but in this day and age when we’re talking about £60m, £80m, £100m, £120m, he is a cup of tea for a top, top drawer centre-half. I don’t know the lad, but from the outside, with everything that’s gone on around transfer deadline day, look at the way he’s acted.”
Guehi was on the verge of joining Liverpool, and the medical examination had also been completed. However, Crystal Palace eventually blocked the deal as they were unable to find a suitable replacement in time.
Therefore, it is now expected that the Englishman will leave the South London club as a free agent at the end of this season, which has allowed Arsenal to potentially sign Guehi for free next summer.
Meanwhile, William Saliba picked up an injury early on in the game against Liverpool on Sunday, and the North Londoners will be hoping that his problem isn’t anything serious.
