Arsenal submit proposal to sign Girona defender Arnau Martinez

By on August 26, 2025

Arsenal have submitted a proposal worth just under £9m for Girona defender Arnau Martinez, according to reports from Santi Aouna of FootMercato.

The Gunners have been very active this summer as Mikel Arteta looks to build a squad capable of challenging on all fronts.

The club has already secured the signing of Cristhian Mosquera to strengthen their backline.

Arsenal are also reportedly closing-in on a deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie as part of their plans to improve defensive depth.

Now, reports suggest that Arsenal have turned their attention to Martinez.

The 22-year-old offers flexibility, as he can operate both as a right-back and a central defender.

His ability to fill more than one role could give Arteta extra options when rotating his squad.

With Ben White struggling with injuries last season, the Gunners are keen to add reliable cover on the right side of their defence.

Martinez is seen as a player who could step in when required and keep the team balanced.

Details of the proposed deal

According to the report, Arsenal have opened talks over a move for Martinez and are proposing a deal worth around £7 million, with an additional £1.8 million in bonuses and performance-related add-ons.

This move appears to be a cost-effective way for the North London club to address their defensive needs without spending heavily.

Martinez had an impressive campaign with Girona last season. He featured 39 times across all competitions, contributing three goals and three assists.

His attacking input from the backline highlights his ability to influence play going forward, which suits Arteta’s system.

Adding Martinez to the squad would give Arsenal another dependable option in a season where injuries and fixture congestion are likely to be challenges.

His presence could reduce the workload on Ben White and Jurrien Timber, ensuring that the team maintains consistency even during demanding periods.

As the transfer window continues, Arsenal appear focused on bolstering their defence further.

With Mosquera already through the door and talks around Hincapie ongoing, a move for Martinez would underline Arteta’s determination to create a squad with depth and quality.
