Arsenal eye surprise swoop to sign Nicolas Jackson
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a surprise swoop to sign Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson, as per TEAMtalk.
The 24-year-old joined the West London club from Villarreal a couple of years ago. He enjoyed a productive debut campaign, scoring 17 goals and registering six assists across all competitions.
However, the African displayed inconsistent performances last term, netting only 13 goals in all competitions. Despite that, he won the Conference League and Club World Cup.
Chelsea have decided to upgrade the centre-forward position by purchasing Joao Pedro and Liam Delap this summer. So, Jackson has fallen in the pecking order.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that the Senegalese international is ready to leave Chelsea to play regularly elsewhere, and the Blues are prepared to cash-in on him for a fee of around £60m.
Following Kai Havertz’s knee injury, Arsenal have purchased Eberechi Eze. However, they have been left with Viktor Gyokeres as the only centre-forward option, with Gabriel Jesus also out injured.
Jackson to Arsenal
Therefore, the Gunners are looking to sign a new striker and have earmarked Jackson as a serious target. Arsenal have kept on signing players from the Blues, and have already bought Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga this summer. Moreover, Havertz, Jorginho, Willian, and David Luis are a few other notable names.
Now, Arsenal are also contemplating purchasing Jackson. However, Newcastle United are also keen on signing the African as a potential replacement for Alexander Isak, so securing the 24-year-old’s signature won’t be straightforward for the North London club.
Although Arsenal have signed Eze to bolster the squad after Havertz’s injury, he is comfortable playing in the CAM or left-wing role. So, he isn’t a centre-forward.
Gyokeres made his competitive debut for Arsenal against Manchester United in the opening Premier League game last weekend. Although Arteta’s side came away with all three points, the Swede had a quiet game.
Therefore, signing a new striker to create competition for Gyokeres might be the right decision. It is going to be interesting to see whether the Emirates club eventually opt to lure the Chelsea man away from Stamford Bridge before the September 1st transfer deadline.
