Arsenal join race to sign Brighton’s Carlos Baleba

Arsenal have reportedly joined the race to sign Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba.

French outlet L’Équipe claims the north London club are among those considering a move.

Baleba joined Brighton from Lille in the summer of 2023 for around £24 million.

Since then, the Cameroonian international has impressed with his performances in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old’s displays have caught the attention of several top clubs in England.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool are all said to be keeping a close watch.

Strong interest from Premier League rivals

Reports suggest Manchester United are leading the race for Baleba. Manager Rúben Amorim views the midfielder as a strong fit for his system at Old Trafford.

Brighton value Baleba at around £104 million, as per the report. This high valuation makes any potential deal for the player more complicated.

Baleba’s situation is further complicated by Arsenal’s busy summer business.

The Gunners have already signed Martin Zubimendi and Christian Nørgaard, strengthening their midfield options.

A move for Baleba would require careful consideration. Arsenal may still make a formal approach if the right opportunity arises later in the window.

However, it’s very difficult to see Mikel Arteta splashing out a huge fee on another defensive midfielder.

Why Arsenal rate Baleba highly

Baleba has featured 77 times for Brighton since his arrival from Lille. He has contributed four goals and two assists during that period.

Although primarily a defensive midfielder, Baleba is versatile enough to also play at centre-back when needed. This flexibility adds extra value to his profile.

The Cameroonian is known for winning aerial duels and reading the game well.

His ability to intercept passes and break up opposition attacks has been a key part of Brighton’s play.

Baleba is also comfortable carrying the ball forward and has the confidence to take shots from long range.

These traits make him an appealing long-term option for any side seeking energy and strength in midfield.

With several elite clubs circling, the competition for Baleba’s signature is expected to intensify.

As much as Baleba would be a terrific signing, Arsenal’s priority may lie elsewhere with Arteta wanting to further strengthen his attack.

Eberechi Eze has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium while Rodrygo is also on Arteta’s radar heading into the final weeks of the window.
