Arthur ready to join Arsenal following transfer talks

By on January 14, 2022

According to Globo Esporte, Arthur has decided he wants to join Arsenal after holding talks with the club and Gunners’ chiefs are now thrashing out a deal with Juventus.

Mikel Arteta is in the market for a new midfielder as Arsenal currently have just one senior midfield player available for selection. Thomas Partey and Mo Elneny are at the African Cup of Nations, Ainsley Maitland-Niles has joined Roma while Martin Odegaard is out with covid.

Emile Smith Rowe is also still on the sidelines with a groin injury and Granit Xhaka is facing a two-game suspension after being sent off during Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg draw with Liverpool on Thursday night.

With a spate of injuries in other areas of the squad, Arsenal have just 12 outfield players available for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Tottenham so the club have asked the Premier League to postpone the North London Derby.

Therefore, it’s no surprise Arteta is desperately trying to strengthen his squad and Arthur has emerged as a prime target after it became clear a permanent move for Bruno Guimaraes was going to be too difficult to pull off this month.

According to Globo Esporte, Arthur has now held talks with Arsenal chiefs to discuss a move to the Emirates after being given permission by Juventus to negotiate a switch to North London. The report says the 25-year-old is ‘excited’ by the prospect of joining Arsenal and will inform Max Allegri of his desire to complete a move to the Emirates.

Arthur wants move

Globo Esporte claims a deal is now close to completion and Arsenal will cover Arthur’s £80,000-a-week [£4.2m a year] wages in order to sign the South American on an initial loan with an option to buy in the summer. Arsenal are now just trying to agree the potential future transfer fee with Juventus before sealing the deal.

The Serie A giants are reluctant to let Arthur leave before a replacement is found but the Brazilian news outlet says there is real optimism that a move will go through, so it looks like Arsenal are closing in on their first signing of the winter window.

As per the report, Edu was the man to identify Arthur as a target and Arsenal’s technical director persuaded Arteta he’d be a great addition to the squad. Edu knows Arthur well from their time together with the Brazilian national team – where he was a director up until 2019.

The Brazilian international has struggled to establish himself during spells at Barcelona and Juventus but you can’t deny Arthur’s talent so he could prove to be a shrewd signing on loan if we can get this deal over the line.
