Arsenal in advanced talks to sign Arthur Melo

By on January 12, 2022

According to RMC Sport, Arsenal are in advanced negotiations with Juventus over deal to sign Arthur Melo on loan for the rest of the season.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is desperately trying to strengthen his squad this month as he looks to continue Arsenal’s push for a top four finish this season and a new midfielder is a top priority.

With Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny away at the African Cup of Nations and Ainsley Maitland-Niles off to AS Roma on loan, Arsenal have been left woefully short of options in the middle of the park.

Granit Xhaka has also been out recently after testing positive for covid so Arsenal have been on the look out for another midfielder to bring in during the January transfer window.

Bruno Guimaraes has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium with many media outlets suggesting that the 24-year-old Lyon ace is Arteta’s prime target. However, RMC Sport claims that although Arsenal are keen on Guimaraes, Arthur has now emerged as our top priority.

Advanced talks

It appears we’re moving fast to get a deal done as the outlet says [see 12:55 in the thread] Arsenal are now in advanced negotiations with Juventus over a move to sign Arthur on loan for the rest of the campaign.

The 25-year-old has struggled to hold down a regular first team place at the Serie A giants since arriving from Barcelona in 2020 and he’s started just 3 league games so far this season. In total, Arthur has played just 426 minutes of football in all competitions this campaign.

Therefore, Juventus could be open to letting him leave this month and it looks like Arsenal are hoping to lure the South American to north London on a short term basis to help solve our midfield crisis.

Personally, I’d have preferred to see Arsenal go all-out to sign Guimaraes on a permanent basis this month but if that deal isn’t feasible, then signing Arthur on loan could be a shrewd move as it will allow us to renew our interest in Guimaraes in the summer.

Let’s see if this story develops over the coming days….
