According to various reports today, Arsenal are in talks to sign Willian after he rejected a two-year contract extension at Chelsea with some suggesting a move to the Emirates is ‘happening’.

Willian has been a key player for Chelsea since joining from Anzi Makhachkala in 2013 but his contract is set to expire and his time at Stamford Bridge looks to be coming to an end after failing to agree terms over a new deal.

Despite being one of their best players since the restart, the South American winger was left out of Chelsea’s squad for Saturday’s defeat to Arsenal in the final of the FA Cup amid rumours he was set for a move across London.

The speculation has intensified today as the Guardian report that Arsenal in locked in talks with Willian after he rejected Chelsea’s final two-year contract offer and journalist Daniel Harris took to Twitter to claim the deal is ‘happening’.

Harris – who writes for the Guardian – suggests that Willian is set to sign a three-year contract at Arsenal after we offered him ‘colossal wages’ to reject Chelsea’s advances in favour of a move to north London.

The Sun are also carrying a report from France Football that claims Arsenal have offered Willian a lucrative three-year deal which has eclipsed all other offers on the table so it looks like we’ve won the race for his signature.

I know some Arsenal fans are against the signing, but I think Willian would be an excellent short-term addition to the squad. He’s been excellent for Chelsea this season after providing 11 goals and 9 assists and he knows the league well following seven years in England.

He’ll turn 32 soon so obviously that’s a concern but he looks fitter than ever and is clearly not slowing down as this has been one of his best seasons so Arsenal should get another two quality years out of him.

Arteta desperately needs to add some creativity to the squad and Willian is better than most of our other attackers. He can also play on either wing or even as an attacking central midfielder so he’d give the boss plenty of options.

Arsenal have plenty of young players with potential but we need top class players who can produce the goods now and Willian certainly fits the bill, so I think it’s a great signing if we can pull it off.
