Official: Denis Suarez has joined Arsenal from Barcelona

By on January 30, 2019

Barcelona have confirmed Denis Suarez has joined Arsenal on loan for the rest of the season and we have an option to make the transfer permanent in the summer.

Suarez has been linked with a move to Arsenal for some time and the transfer seemed to have stalled after Barcelona refused to accept our offer of a loan with an option to buy as they wanted an obligation to buy clause included in the deal.

However, a breakthrough was reached when Suarez agreed to sign a one-year contract extension which protected his value if Arsenal opted against making the deal permanent in the summer.

Suarez flew in to London to undergo his medical on Wednesday morning and Barcelona have now announced on their official website that the midfielder has joined Arsenal on loan until the end of the season.

The statement on fcbarcelona.com read:

FC Barcelona and Denis Suárez have reached an agreement for the extension of the player’s contract with the club, which ended on 30 June 2020, until 30 June 2021.

FC Barcelona have also agreed a loan deal for Suárez with Arsenal for the remainder of the 2018/19 season. The Premier League club will pay the player’s salary during this time and the agreement includes an option to buy.

Unai Emery knows the midfielder well from their time together at Sevilla and the 25-year-old will add some much needed creativity to the squad during the second half of the season.

The Spaniard can play as an attacking central midfielder or on the wing – where he played under Emery at Sevilla – so he’ll give us a versatile option in attack.

Let’s hope his loan works out as the Express claim we can pay around £20m to make the deal permanent in the summer, which would be an excellent deal if things go well.
