Arsenal eye international CB as Mislintat starts work on three new signings
According to the Mirror, Arsenal have identified three areas of the squad that need strengthening and Sven Mislintat has already began working on filling the positions.
Arsene Wenger’s position as manager has come under severe scrutiny following our back-to-back embarrassments against Manchester City and there is a growing feeling this will finally be the summer we see him leave.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Wenger’s future or who’ll be in charge at the end of the season, it seems the club are still making preparations for the summer window.
The Mirror claim we’re looking to sign a new goalkeeper, centre-back and defensive midfielder and new head of recruitment Sven Mislintat has been tasked with delivering the three new signings.
Mislintat has already began work on securing the players we want with the report suggesting we’ll renew our interest in West Brom defender Jonny Evans this summer.
We were strongly linked with Evans during the January window but refused to meet West Brom’s £25m+ asking price as we know he has a £3m buy out clause if the Baggies are relegated.
Alan Pardew’s side current sit rock bottom and seven points from safety so there’s a good chance Evans will be available for just £3m and Arsenal are ready to pounce for the Northern Ireland international.
The Mirror says we also want a new number one to replace Petr Cech and it’s hardly a surprise given his shocking form for much of the season while a new holding midfielder is also on the agenda.
Granit Xhaka has been a woeful signing so I don’t think there is any doubt we need a strong defensive midfielder to come in this summer to add some protection to the back four.
However, worryingly, the report says Arsenal have only limited funds available to rebuild the squad this summer after splashing out £56m on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January.
Now, I’m not sure how that can be the case given we made profit in the summer and almost broke even in January following the sales of Theo Walcott, Olivier Giroud and Francis Coquelin.
We also posted healthy financial figures earlier this week showing we have over £130m cash in the bank so there is no reason why we shouldn’t have plenty of money available this summer, even if we miss out on the Champions League again.
