French star agrees to join Arsenal as Wenger eyes bargain £35m swoop – report

By on January 26, 2018

According to reports in Spain via the Mirror, Karim Benzema has an agreement with Arsene Wenger to join Arsenal but we’ve yet to agree a fee with Real Madrid over his signature.

Benzema has long been linked with a move to Arsenal with Arsene Wenger’s interest dating way back to the striker’s time with Lyon before he joined Madrid in 2009.

The French international has been touted in the media as an Arsenal target for as long as I can remember and it seems the specualtion has once again resurfaced this winter.

We’ve been strongly linked with a move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this month but with talks between Arsenal and Dortmund stalling, it seems Wenger has lined-up Benzema as an alternative.

The Mirror is citing reports coming out of Spain as saying that Benzema has an agreement in place to join Wenger at the Emirates if a deal can be agreed between the two clubs.

The 30-year-old has endured a difficult last 18 months as he only scored 11 league goals last season and has just 2 to his name so far this campaign and it’s led to suggestions that Madrid are ready to rejuvenate their attack.

However, we still need to agree a fee and the newspaper says Arsenal are hoping to secure a bargain £35m deal while Madrid are demanding around £52m to cash-in on the striker, so we’re miles apart in our valuations.

It’s difficult to know what to believe as there is so much speculation flying about these days but Arsenal are in the market for a new striker – as our pursuit of Aubameyang shows – so perhaps Wenger has gone back in for Benzema.

The Frenchman looks like he needs a fresh start and his ability is unquestioned as he’s been one of the best strikers in Europe for almost a decade so I’d still love to see him join Arsenal.

However, despite his woes in Spain, I’d still be hugely surprised to see anything happen in January so any potential move for Benzema is likely to happen in the summer.
