Arsenal Close-In On €28m Deal As Chief Flies-In For Formal Talks
Yet more speculation linking Arsenal with a centre-back as the Metro are claiming today that Roma chief Walter Sabatini is flying-in to London to hold talks with Arsenal over a potential deal for Alessio Romagnoli.
The 20-year-old has caught the eye after putting in some excellent displays while away on loan at Sampdoria last season and it’s led to interest from a number of top clubs.
The Daily Star reported earlier this week that Arsenal were lining-up a huge €28m (£20m) offer for the Italian U21 international as Arsene Wenger apparently looks to strengthen his options at the back this summer.
It looks like we’ve now stepped-up our interest as the Metro claim that Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini is due to arrive in London to hold face-to-face talks over a possible deal.
I had my doubts over this transfer earlier in the week but all parties must be serious about a deal happening if we are planning to meet with Sabatini anytime soon.
Romagnoli is the latest centre-back to be linked with a move to the Emirates in recent weeks and although I admitted my surprise at us being tipped to move for Ezequiel Garay in an article earlier today, signing a youngster like Romagnoli would make a lot more sense.
If Wenger is planning on signing a central defender, there is little point bringing in an experienced player who’s going to want regular first team football as we already have Mertesacker, Koscielny and Gabriel vying for two starting spots.
So I think it would be more practical to buy a youngster, such as Romagnoli, who can act as back-up, learn from his more experienced team mates for a season or two, then hopefully take over the first team shirt.
We’ll have to wait and see how these supposed talks with Roma go but Romagnoli sounds like he has a bright future ahead of him so I’d be glad to see him come to the club this summer – although I’m not too sure about the reported £20m price tag. That sounds a lot for such an inexperienced player.
