Wenger Confirms Injury Set-Back But Midfielder Returns vs Reading

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Mikel Arteta has suffered a minor injury set-back but Jack Wilshere will definitely be back in the squad to face Reading this weekend.

Arteta hasn’t featured since suffering a calf injury against Borussia Dortmund way back in November and his return was further delayed after he picked up an ankle injury at the turn of the year.

The Spaniard was on course to making his comeback after playing for the under-21’s against Stoke last week but Wenger has now revealed that the midfielder has suffered a minor set-back after aggravating his ankle problem.

Arteta will therefore miss Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Reading but should be back in training next week.

The boss told reporters:

‘He has a little ankle inflammation when he moved out of the last game against Stoke, in the reserves, and since he has not been back in the squad but he should be back next week,’ said Wenger.

Wilshere has also not played since November when he suffered ankle ligament damage against Manchester United, but the 23-year-old has come through two run-outs with the under-21’s unscathed and Arsene has confirmed he’ll be back in the squad tomorrow – although he hasn’t decided if he’ll start or not.

‘He [Wilshere] has improved physically. You want me to say yes or no will he start but I honestly haven’t decided. He is fit enough to be in the squad and he will be in the squad.’

I think it would be a huge risk to start Jack so I feel he’ll be named on the bench against Reading. He has a huge task to force his way back into the first team as Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin have been outstanding in recent months while Aaron Ramsey is also back to full fitness.
