Balague: Atletico Convinced Arsenal Star Will Join Them

By on February 17, 2015

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague claims that Atletico Madrid have made contact with Santi Cazorla’s representatives and are convinced they can tempt him into a summer move back to La Liga.

Speculation has been circulating in recent days suggesting that Atletico have stepped up their interest in Cazorla having failed to land him last summer.

Most Arsenal fans will be used to these rumours as Santi’s been linked with a move back to Spain during practically ever transfer window since he joined the club in 2012.

However, it seems there could be something to it this time as well known Spanish football expert and Sky Sports regular, Guillem Balague, claims that Atletico have in fact made contact with Cazorla’s people to discuss a move at the end of the season.

Balague says that Santi will have just 12 months left on his contract this summer and the La Liga champions are ‘convinced’ they’ll be able to lure him away from the Emirates on the cheap.

“He has 18 months left on his contract at Arsenal, and Atletico have contacted Cazorla’s entourage.

“Atletico are convinced that they can persuade the player to join them. Then they just have to pay the money.

“There will be one year left on his contract in the summer, and will be available for cheaper.” source

Cazorla has been enjoying the best form of his career over the past few months and it would be devastating if he was to leave this summer, but has he really only got less than 18 months left on his deal?!

He only signed a new contract extension in March 2014 and the BBC reported at the time that his new deal ran until the summer of 2017, while TranferMarkt.co.uk suggest it’s until 2018.

Sanit’s initial contract when he signed in 2012 was at least a four-year deal which would have expired in 2016, so why would we hand him an ‘extension’ that expired at the same time? Surely his new contract must run until at least 2017 meaning he’ll have 24 months left this summer?

Obviously if he does have just 12 months left then we’ll be in a difficult situation but I’d be majorly surprised if that’s the case.

Either way, it looks like Atletico are going to make another push for his signature this summer and I pray we manage to keep hold of him as we’re just starting to see the best of Cazorla again.

It could be true but otherwise it is the Spanish way of long term de stabilising a player before pouncing. Or indeed it could be Santi’s agent with 18 months left on his contract. If Wenger lets him go it will be another big mistake.
