RATINGS: Arsenal 1-2 Southampton: Podolski + Rosicky Awful

By on September 23, 2014

Lukas+Podolski

Arsenal crashed out of the Capital One Cup tonight after losing 2-1 to Southampton at the Emirates. Here are my player ratings from the game:

Ospina 6.5/10 – Great early save to deny Davies and made a decent stop from a Tadic free-kick but could have done better for the Clyne thunderbolt.

Bellerin 6.5/10 – Plenty of endeavor to get forward and put a couple of dangerous crosses in, but given a hard time by Tadic.

Hayden 7/10 – Very promising debut from the youngster. Looked composed and at home in the first team.

Chambers 6.5/10 – Not the result he would have wanted against his former side and looked a little shaky at times.

Coquelin 7/10 – I  thought he looked solid at left-back. Put in a real shift and never gave up.

Diaby 7/10 – Great to see him back. Got a solid 66 minutes under his belt and showed some great touches.

Wilshere 6.5/10 – Not on the ball as much as he would have liked. Struggled to influence the game in the final third.

Campbell 6/10 – In and out the game. Nothing really came off for him.

Rosicky 4.5/10 – Stupidly gave away a penalty for the equaliser and looked well short of match fitness, but at least he put a bit of effort in……

Podolski 4/10 – Completely anonymous. Barely touched the ball and his only real contribution was to miss a great chance when put through in the first half but shot straight at Forster. The lack of effort was astounding for a player of his experience.

Sanchez 7.5/10 – Stunning free kick and close to adding another after the break but was denied at close range by Forster. Never gives up and Podolski could learn a thing or two from this guys work-rate.

Subs: Cazorla (6.5), The Ox (6) Akpom (N/A)

Obviously it’s disappointing to crash out of the Cup but at least we can concentrate on the most important competitions for the rest of the season. Let’s hope for a much-improved performance against Spurs….

Really dont think Campbell deserved that high of a grade. Also have been thinking Sanchez is another of those fast guys, high work rate but they’re not putting the balls in the back of the net. The shots to goals ratios are terribly out of wack ala Walcott. Would be happy to see podolski go elsewhere so he can get game time.

I really think that Sanchez plays with too much strength rather than brains. Should play more with the team rather than wasting free and corner kicks. Poldi just came to warm the grass and the captain marshalled one of the worst outings in an arsenal shirt. Should know better than plunging like that in the 18! All the young boys played better than all the old boys so what does that tell u?

I agree to a certain extent with the above, Diaby did well and Hayden was the best player on the pitch. Alexis was strong but died towards the end but scored a beautiful goal, meaning direct free kick are between him and Santi NOt Arteta. Podolski was a huge disappointment, no heart and what was up with trying to place that shot instead of thundering it home. Rosicky is a sub not a start, great energy in that role note 90 minutes, to many mistakes when he should be the calming factor on the pitch. Wilshere is a waste of space, jogging back instead of playing defence and the second goal was all is fault, if he had closed down Clyne it would not have been a goal! Wilshere does not deserve to have the number 10!!

Diaby was not up to scratch and lets be honest the service to the players up front was dismally poor from all concerned. Tonight once again showed that we are lacking a out and out striker.

the real concern is that Southampton were by FAR the better team last night.
