Revealed: Wenger’s Three-Man Transfer Hit-List

Arsene Wenger has drawn up a three-man short-list of transfer targets as he looks to bring in a versatile defensive-minded player before the end of the month, according to the Telegraph.

The boss has made no secret that he needs to bring in at least one more signing following the exit of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona.

While many fans feel we need a defender and a defensive midfielder,  Arsene has hinted that he might look to bring in one player who can play a number of positions and the Telegraph claim he has identified Benedikt Höwedes, Luiz Gustavo and William Carvalho as his three top targets.

Höwedes is currently Schalke’s captain and although he played the entire World Cup for Germany as a left-back, he’s predominantly a centre-back. He’d no doubt be an excellent addition for the defence, but he can’t play in midfield so if we do bring him in, I hope we also have plans for a defensive midfielder.

Carvalho has been strongly linked in recent weeks and he’s available at around £24m as Sporting Lisbon need to sell. The Portuguese youngster can play in midfield and in defence, so would be an excellent addition and at just 22, he has plenty of time to get even better.

Gustavo would be a best signing of the lot as not only is he a world class defensive midfielder, but he’s capable of playing at centre-back and left-back. We know Wenger rates him as we almost signed him when he left Bayern Munich last summer but he opted for a switch to Wolfsburg as he had concerns over getting first team football at the Emirates.

He should have no such concerns now, however, he’s going to be extremely difficult to buy as Real Madrid are on his case and Wolfsburg are demanding big money for the Brazilian international.

We’ll have to see who the boss opts for in the end but if I had to bet on it, I’d say Carvalho will be the last player we’ll sign before the end of the month.

   Go Go for Carvalho before its too late Wenger. We badly need a defensive midfielder who can compete with Arteta.

   I think Wenger is wrong to sell Vermaelen. If he can be patient with Diaby, the Verminator could have been loaned out to a Premiership side that can guarantee him first team football. Mr. Wenger needs to hurry up and round up his transfer business. I know he likes a good bargain and will wait till the 11th hour to get the 2-4 players needed on the cheap. I won’t mind having Alex Song back. Douglas Costa, Hulk or Morgan Schneiderlin or the young Greek defender won’t be bad signings either.

   Gustavo can the best option but Wenger can talk about people but don’t buy, Arsenal still for sure and you see this at the end of the season, money is there but don’t want to spend. that will up to Wenger and Arsenal.

   Let’s be clear that this jack-of-all trade approach is cheap. In Varmaelen we lost a defender who is good at CD and LB; now we are looking to replace him with someone who is good in those positions as well as in the midfield. I suggest that if we need a replacement for Varmaelen, then we go for one – a CD who can fill in for LB. And if we need a DM as well, we go get a good one who could probably fill in for CD. Being able to play two positions is enough versatility. Asking someone to play in all the positions at the back will require compromises in terms of specialty. It is for this same attitude that we still can’t say with any certainty what position Ox, Theo, Jack and even Aaron play, and this has implications for a player’s development and stability.

   In terms of building the squad, we have essentially only added Sanchez. Debuccy replaces Sagna, Ospina for Fabianski, Campbell for Bendtner, Chambers for Jenkinson. While it might amount to improving the team overall, we cannot be said to have deepened the resource pool significantly from last season.
