Arsenal Have Two €30m Deals Lined-Up – Who Will We End Up With?
Arsenal’s hunt for a defensive midfielder continues to dominate the gossip columns with the Telegraph reporting the latest on our pursuits of Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira and Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho today.
The duo have emerged as our key targets in recent weeks with widespread reports linking us with both players, and the Telegraph claim that we have €30m deals in the pipe-line for both midfielders.
The paper states that we have an agreement in place with Madrid for Khedira but as has been widely reported, we are struggling to agree personal terms. The German is understood to want around £150,000-a-week over four years, which means the entire deal would cost us over £55m.
That type of investment isn’t to be sniffed at, particularly when buying a player who’s just come off the back of a serious knee injury, and the report suggests that Arsene is going cold on the deal due to the 27-year-old’s poor injury record.
This has seen the boss leaning towards pushing ahead with a deal for Carvalho. The Telegraph claim that we also have a €30m agreement with Sporting in the pipe-line for the 22-year-old and as long as we’re prepared to pay the entire fee up front, Carvalho can be ours.
Obviously the Portuguese international doesn’t have the experience of Khedira, but he’s much younger and doesn’t come with a patchy injury history, plus he’ll ask for a fraction of the wages, so the deal will be significantly cheaper overall.
It’s going to be interesting to see who we end up with but as it stands, it looks like Carvalho is the most likely to come to the Emirates this summer. Khedira may be the ‘bigger’ name and would probably be a better short-term option, but Carvalho has his whole career ahead of him and has room to improve under the tutelage of Wenger.
Carvalho is also more of a defensive midfielder than Khedira and for this reason alone I think he’d be the one to go with, but in the end the decision is probably going to come down to price and I really don’t see Arsenal agreeing to pay the wages Khedira wants, which should see Carvalho move to North London.
The next few days are going to be key as Khedira returned to Madrid on Tuesday and is due to hold talks over his future, so we should know a lot more by the end of the week.

Carvalho represent a good business, tick all the boxes for me at 22yrs I believe he has what it takes to double his prices at arsenal.

Just want to say, William Carvalho is a big, fierce, powerful, technically excellent DM. We miss the Gilberto Silva/Pat Viera type player. Players like Kondogbia, Guilavogui, Bender are all tall and good. Carvalho is in a different league, he is tall but much stronger and proficient than all of them. If we buy him we WILL win the league…in my opinion.

I assume you watch a large amount of Portuguese football in order to be able to make such a statement, or how many games is this assessment based on?

Well, I do watch a large amount of Portugese football, and I agree with him fully, what I would add though is that he is very good at passing, kept 100% pass accuracy playing 90mins in one of the games I watched him in.

Carvalho definitely! He’s younger and injury free!
A better bet than Kheidra anytime. Cheaper too!
And with the purchase of Mats Hummel Arsenal will be prepared going into the next season with every possibility of winning trophies!!

carvalho is more reliable than khedira, in terms of physicality n technicality, n beside all he is a cheaper option, can also serve the purpose very well like d former.

I think William will be a better option considering the fact that he is more of a defensive midfielder and I think his wages will not be of a problem compared to what he earns in sporting Lisbon.

Arsene has stated categorically that Arsenal have not made an offer for Khedira, as recently as this week. I think that whole story is a red herring. William totally different situation, I think that rumour may have some truth to it. Watching William play I can see how he would fit in. He is adept at winning the ball, quickly gaining control of it and distributing. Combine that with the pace of Alexis and Walcott on the counter and you have a real threat. It is what Arteta tries to do but he doesn’t have the build to consistently muscle his opposition off the ball, which you need in that position.

I think carvalho is the best option for us, and if we can secure his signing then we will be on the right track futhermore khedira is a bit old and injury prone and that is what cost us last season, we don’t want it to repeat.

I prefer Williams to sami bse William is still young. But i hope wenger is not making spectulations bse this issue of the dm has become a song almost everyday.why does wenger does things like Jose does, today u talk abt a player 2morrow u see him in.why is he always making headlines?
