Fellaini Set To Follow Higuain To Arsenal As Wenger Prepres £45m Spree
The summer transfer window is starting to get interesting Gooners, with reports today from the Evening Standard claiming that boss Arsene Wenger is prepared to spend a further £23m on Marouane Fellaini just days after agreeing a deal to sign Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid for £22m.
It’s understood that all parties are confident the deal to bring Higuain to the Emirates Stadium will be concluded in the coming days once Carlo Ancelotti is confirmed as Jose Mourinho’s replacement at the Bernabeu, after the Argentinean hitman agreed personal terms over a four-year contract.
The 25-year-old’s purchase would smash Arsenal’s current transfer record – set at £15m paid for Andrey Arshavin in 2009 – and would represent a huge shift in transfer policy from the club.
However, the spending may not end their with the Standard suggesting that Wenger will then go and break our transfer record for a second time this summer by activating the £23m release clause inserted into Fellaini’s Everton contract.
The boss is a huge fan of the Belgian international’s and with Fellaini understood to be keen on a move following David Moyes departure, Wenger had hoped to pick him up for less than his buy-out fee. But the Toffees have refused to go lower than the £23m required and it appears Arsene is now prepared to pay that sum to bring the afro-haired ace to north London.
It would be a stunning double swoop if we can pull it off and it would see the club splash £45m on two excellent new additions. These are my two ‘dream’ (buy realistic) summer targets and I’d be delighted if we can sign them both in the coming weeks.
It seems the Higuain deal is extremely close, although I’ve just read a report suggesting Juventus may try and make a late move to hijack our deal, but I have a feeling Fellaini’s signature will be even harder to secure. I can see the likes of Chelsea and Man Utd showing an interest if we make a move so I’m not going to get my hopes up too much just yet.
Would we be title contenders if we signed Higuain and Fellaini? Share your thoughts in the comments section…
