Arsenal Reluctant To Pay £32m For Top Target, Eye £8m Ace Instead
Arsenal are set to turns their attention to £8m-rated Ipswich Town defender Tyrone Mings with Arsene Wenger reluctant to match Mats Hummels £32m asking price.
The boss is expected to bring in another centre-back in January after admitting we’re short of options at the back and widespread reports suggest our top target is Borussia Dortmund skipper Hummels.
The 25-year-old is being tipped to leave the Westfalenstadion after failing to agree terms over a contract extension and he could look for a new challenge with Dortmund currently sitting bottom of the Bundesliga and likely to miss out on Champions League football next season.
However, the Daily Mail are reporting that Wenger has now been put off by Dortmund’s £32m asking price which has left Manchester United as favourites to snap up the defender as the former champions are prepared to match what the German outfit are demanding.
The newspaper suggests that we are now set to turn our attention to Ipswich youngster Tyrone Mings – who’s been catching the eye with some outstanding performances in the Championship – with Wenger understood to be lining-up an £8m bid.
Ipswich could find it difficult to turn down such an offer, but Chelsea are also believed to be interested so we could face stiff competition from our London rivals.
Mings is certainly one of the hottest young defensive prospects in England but I’d question the wisdom in bringing in an unproven player when we clearly need an experienced pro to come in and offer a reliable alternative to Kos and Per at the back.
Hummels would be ideal, as I actually think he’d replace Mertesacker in the starting eleven and could form a rock-solid partnership alongside Koscielny, but I do understand the clubs reluctance to pay over £30m for a centre-back.
But unfortunately that’s the going rate for top class defenders these days. United will pay that kind of money so if we want to compete for the best players, then we have to pay the big bucks and Hummels would be worth the outlay.
