Arsenal Skipper Picks Up Hamstring Injury
Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen was forced off midway through the first half of Belgium’s 1-0 win over Russia tonight with an apparent hamstring injury.
Vermaelen was recalled to the starting line-up in place of Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen but only lasted just over half an hour after being withdrawn in the 31st minute.
The 29-year-old picked up a knock in the warm up before the match but decided he was fit to play – although it’s not clear whether this problem is related to the hamstring injury that forced him off or not.
Vermaelen will now be checked by Belgium’s medical staff to find out the extent of the injury, but if it’s a strain he may struggle to play again at the World Cup, which would be a huge shame for him.
Fingers crossed it’s not serious as I’d love Belgium to go far in this tournament, and Vermaelen deserves some success after a difficult 18 months at Arsenal.
