Wenger To Scout Juventus Ace Ahead Of Possible €11m Move
According to reports, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will run-the-rule over Switzerland right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner this evening ahead of a potential €11m swoop.
An experienced right-back is a major priority this summer after Bacary Sagna agreed to join Manchester City on a free transfer when his contract expires later this month.
The likes of Seamus Coleman and Serge Aurier have been strongly linked in recent weeks but the Mirror are claiming today that Arsene is also showing a keen interest in Juventus defender Lichtsteiner and will watch the player in action for his country when Switzerland take on Ecuador this evening.
The newspaper suggests the boss has been impressed by the 30-year-old’s performances in Italy this past season where he helped Juve lift the Serie A title and feels he’d bring the kind of reliability we need now that Sagna’s gone.
Lichtsteiner has just 12 months remaining on his current deal and with no sign of an extension being signed any time soon, the asking price will only be around €11m (£9m) – which would be an excellent deal for a player of his quality.
As he’s now 30, he won’t have any sell-on value – which could be a concern for the typically frugal Wenger – but the bonus of his age is that he won’t pose a threat to the long-term development of Carl Jenkinson.
