Arsenal Star ‘Tells Team Mates He’s Leaving This Summer’
Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has supposedly told team mates he’s leaving the club at the end of the season, according to reports.
The Frenchman is edging closer to the exit door with each passing week as his contract heads towards it’s expiration date in June. We’ve held several rounds of talks with the right-back’s representatives but have so far been unable to find a breakthrough.
Reports last month suggested Arsenal chiefs had decided to up their offer to £100,000-a-week but with the likes of Galatasaray, PSG and Monaco all understood to be willing to pay in excess of £120,000-a-week AFTER tax over a four-year deal, it seems we’re going to come up short.
Now, ESPN are carrying quotes from an unnamed ‘source’ from within the club who has apparently told the Sun that Sagna has informed team mates he’ll be leaving this summer.
“Bacary has told some of his team-mates he won’t be staying beyond the summer. It is a shame as he is popular.”
The news comes just days after the 31-year-old had dropped a major hint that he might stay on at the Emirates, after telling journalists how much he loved Arsenal and questioned why he’d want to leave the club. He told the Mirror:
“I love Arsenal, I love playing for Arsenal, I love my team. Arsenal is the most followed team in France and I remember I used to watch them when I was in France so it was a pleasure to play for them, so why leave?”
I’ve said all along that the longer the contract stalemate continues the less likely it is Sagna will stay. I do think deep down he’d like to sign an extension and possibly finish his career here, but this is his last big contract so you can’t blame him for wanting to get the most out of it.
He’s now 31 and has suffered two bad leg breaks in recent years, so you can also appreciate why Arsenal are reluctant to match what the likes of Galatasaray are prepared to give him. So, unless he’s willing to lower his demands, I just don’t see him staying.
It’s going to leave a huge void in the squad and I just hope Arsene Wenger brings in an experienced right-back if Bacary does go, because Jenskinson isn’t ready to be our first team regular just yet.
