Arsenal Skipper Gives Positive Update On ‘Short-Term’ Injury
Forgotten Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen has given a positive update on his recovery from knee and calf injuries.
The Belgian defender has been forced to sit and watch on from the sidelines as Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny have forged a solid partnership at the back over the past 12 months.
His bid to try and force his way back into Arsene Wenger’s plans has been hampered recently after he picked up a knee injury during the first half of our FA Cup win over Tottenham back on the 4th of January.
The 28-year-old was on the verge of a comeback two weeks ago but then suffered a set back after picking up a calf problem in training.
However, Vermaelen has now revealed that his recovery is going well and he’s now back in training as he looks to regain his fitness, with the injury described as ‘short term’.
He told Arsenal.com today:
“It’s going well, I’m training outside now and getting back to fitness. It was a knee injury, but then I also had some tightness in my calf. But it’s getting better now, so I shouldn’t be out for long.
“I don’t want to put a date on it, but I can say it will be short-term. I’m building up my fitness now.”
While Vermaelen may no longer be a first team regular anymore, he’s technically still the club captain and we are badly exposed at centre-back without him being fit and available when needed.
Should Per or Kos pick up an injury, we’ll be screwed, so it’s good to hear that the Belgian international will be back sooner rather than later.
