Arsenal working to sign James Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye
Arsenal are reportedly working to sign Manchester United duo James Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye, as per The Athletic.
After finishing second in three consecutive Premier League campaigns, the Gunners finally became English champions under Mikel Arteta’s guidance last term. This was their first league title since 2004.
However, Arsenal don’t want to sit back and relax as they are keen on continuing their momentum over the coming seasons. So, they have been busy in this summer window to refresh the squad.
After adding depth to the goalkeeping department by signing Illan Meslier, Arsenal signed Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge. More recently, they have purchased Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United, having allowed Christian Norgaard to join Everton.
Furthermore, the North London club have decided to sign a new defender following William Saliba and Jurrien Timber’s injury problems and are on the verge of purchasing Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa.
Now, The Athletic report that alongside reinforcing the first team, Arsenal are also interested in upgrading the youth team and are working to sign Scanlon and Ogunneye.
Scanlon hasn’t been able to make his first-team debut for the Red Devils yet but has been a regular member of the Gibraltar national team. He joined Swindon Town on loan in the winter window to play regularly and develop his career, but remained on the periphery.
Scanlon and Ogunneye to Arsenal
On the other hand, Ogunneye is a right-back by trait and like Scanlon, he is yet to make his first-team debut for the 20-time English champions. The 20-year-old joined Newport County on loan last summer and featured regularly during the first half of last term. However, he returned to United in winter.
Man Utd have signed Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven from Arsenal in recent years. Although the Dane hasn’t been able to break into the Red Devils’ starting line-up, Heaven has impressed.
On the other hand, Myles Lewis-Skelly has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in this window. So, Arsenal are also looking to sign young talents from United.
Scanlon and Ogunneye are talented players and possess high potential. So, they might be shrewd acquisitions for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future should they eventually manage to secure their services.
