Arsenal maintaining close contact to sign Julian Alvarez

By on August 14, 2026

Arsenal are reportedly maintaining close contact to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, as per TEAMtalk.

After winning the Premier League title last campaign, the Gunners have signed Illan Meslier, Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis thus far in this window.

However, TEAMtalk claim that Arsenal also want to reinforce the centre-forward position and Alvarez is a serious target. The forward is ready to leave the Spanish capital to take the next step in his career, but Barcelona are his preferred destination.

The Blaugrana even launched a formal £86m proposal previously to seal the deal. However, Los Rojiblancos rejected the bid as they have no intention of letting him join a La Liga rival.

Following Alvarez’s return from an extended holiday after the World Cup campaign with Argentina, Diego Simeone held talks with the forward. But he made it clear once again that he wants to leave.

The report state that Barcelona haven’t given up hope of purchasing him and are set to raise funds by selling Ferran Torres to make a final push for Alvarez.

Arsenal have been keeping a close eye on the situation, and Andrea Berta has been in contact with Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin, who has been handling the Alvarez deal, to sign the Argentinian if his move to Barcelona eventually falls through. Arsenal are even maintaining contact with the player’s representatives as well.

Alvarez to Arsenal

Alvarez has showcased his productivity for Atlético Madrid over the last two seasons, although he hasn’t been able to win any major silverware.

He previously enjoyed great success with Manchester City and has won a World Cup and two Copa America trophies with Argentina in recent years.

The 26-year-old is one of the best forwards in the world and is currently at the prime stage of his career. Therefore, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to secure his services by defeating Barcelona in this race.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are set to face Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday before starting the Premier League campaign against Coventry City next week.
