Arsenal make ‘contact’ to sign Atletico Madrid’s Marc Pubill
Arsenal have reportedly made ‘contact’ over a deal to sign Atletico Madrid defender Marc Pubill, as per transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
After moving to the Estadio Metropolitano from Almería, the 23-year-old featured as a rotational option under Diego Simeone last campaign; still, he showed glimpses of his qualities, making two goal contributions and keeping eight clean sheets across all competitions.
After being impressed by his performances, Luis De La Fuente selected him for Spain’s World Cup-winning squad, but he failed to break into the starting line-up.
Now, on his YouTube channel, Romano states that Arsenal are considering purchasing a new centre-back this summer and really appreciate Pubill.
So, they have already made ‘contact’ to learn about the details of signing him. However, Los Rojiblancos have made it clear that they have no intention of parting ways with him this summer, with his existing deal set to run until 2030.
Apart from the Spaniard, Arsenal expressed their interest in Cristian Romero, but Tottenham Hotspur didn’t want to sell him to their arch-rival, and he is now expected to join Atlético Madrid.
The journalist further claims that Arsenal have also identified Ezri Konsa as a serious option to strengthen the backline, but Aston Villa won’t let him leave for cheap, with his existing deal set to run until 2028.
Pubill to Arsenal
Pubill is a 6ft 3in tall, right-footed, technically gifted, versatile defender. He is a centre-back by trait but is also comfortable in the right-back position. He is quick, strong, good in the air, and extremely comfortable playing out from the back.
Moreover, the Spaniard, valued at around £30m by Transfermarkt, can play threading passes between the lines, reads the game well, and is efficient in defensive contributions.
Following William Saliba’s serious back injury, Arsenal currently have Cristhian Mosquera as the only specialist RCB option. Jurrien Timber and Ben White can provide cover in this area if needed, but they mainly play as right-backs.
However, Timber has been out injured in recent months, while White has had numerous fitness problems over the last few campaigns.
Pubill is a talented player and could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they eventually manage to secure his services this summer.
