Arsenal eye ambitious swoop to sign Barcelona’s Marc Bernal

Arsenal are reportedly weighing up an ambitious swoop to sign Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal, as per Caught Offside.

The 19-year-old started his youth career at Berga before spending a very brief spell at Gimnàstic Manresa. He joined the Blaugrana’s famous La Masia academy at the age of six.

Having come through their youth system, the youngster made his first team debut a couple of years ago. However, he picked up a serious knee issue; as a result, he was sidelined for around a year.

After returning to full fitness, Bernal featured as a rotational option last campaign, making six goal contributions in 15 starts across all competitions. He even helped his side win the La Liga title and Supercopa de España last term.

Following Frenkie de Jong’s recent injury, Bernal is likely to play regularly alongside Pedri in Hansi Flick’s starting line-up next season.

Now, Caught Offside claim that Arsenal are interested in the Barcelona star and have been monitoring his development closely before making a potential swoop.

However, the Gunners will have to overcome several obstacles to finalise the operation. Manchester City have identified Bernal as a potential long-term replacement for Rodrigo Hernandez, while Chelsea are also in this race.

Moreover, Barcelona have no intention of letting him leave, with his existing deal set to run until 2029. Bernal is even keen on staying at Camp Nou and has a £428m[€500m] release clause.

Bernal is a 6ft 4in tall left-footed deep-lying playmaker. He is quick, technically sound, comfortable with possession, can play threading passes between the lines, and is efficient in defensive contributions.

Moreover, he has an eye for long-range passing and has the tendency to chip in with some important goals. Bernal is a talented player and possesses high potential.

Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services during this offseason.

Meanwhile, after cashing-in on Leandro Trossard, the Emirates club have reinforced the left flank by purchasing Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge.
