Arsenal leading the chase to sign Bruno Guimaraes
Arsenal are reportedly leading the chase to sign Newcastle United star Bruno Guimarães, as per TEAMtalk.
Despite revamping the engine room by purchasing Christian Norgaard and Martin Zubimendi last summer, the Gunners are considering signing a new midfielder in this window.
The reason behind that is Norgaard struggled to break into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up last campaign. On the other hand, Zubimendi displayed inconsistent performances in his debut season in the Premier League.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that Arsenal are showing a keen interest in signing Guimaraes and are currently leading the chase, although Manchester City have also been keeping a close eye on his current situation.
The Brazilian’s preferred destination is the Emirates Stadium, and Arsenal believed he could be available for a discount deal this summer, with the midfielder set to turn 29 later this year.
However, Newcastle have no intention of letting him leave cheaply, having already sold Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali. They sold Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur for a £100m package, and Man City bought Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for around £116m.
So, Newcastle believe Guimarães is worth a similar fee, with his existing deal set to run until 2028, and they would only begin negotiations for a fee well above £80m, with a package closer to £100m.
Guimarães to Arsenal
Guimarães is a versatile player as he is comfortable playing in the box-to-box and defensive midfield positions. So, Mikel Arteta would be able to pair him up with Declan Rice and could even use him to give the Englishman a breather if he joins.
Guimarães struggled with fitness problems last term but still showcased his productivity, scoring nine goals and registering seven assists in 41 appearances across all competitions.
Having proven his worth in club football, the 28-year-old has established himself as an undisputed starter in the Brazilian national team’s starting line-up.
Guimarães is a Premier League proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure him to the Emirates Stadium during this offseason.
