Arsenal make club-to-club contact to sign Julian Alvarez
Arsenal have made Atletico Madrid centre-forward Julian Alvarez their dream target for the summer transfer window, according to Ben Jacobs.
Alvarez has evolved from one of the most promising centre-forward prospects to one of Europe’s most lethal finishers.
He has consistently maintained goalscoring form since coming through the ranks at River Plate’s academy, where he recorded 85 goal contributions in 122 games.
Despite mostly playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland at Manchester City, Alvarez was a reliable presence whenever called upon and still reached up to 55 goal involvements during his time at the Etihad.
Following his big-money move to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024, the 26-year-old has maintained his excellent output in front of goal, already reaching 66 goal contributions, including 29 last season.
His goalscoring prowess is not limited to the club level. He has been Lionel Scaloni’s preferred centre-forward option since breaking through and most recently marked his 15th goal for Argentina with a worldie in extra time against Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
Such a level of consistent prolific scoring form will undoubtedly draw keen interest, with Arsenal regularly linked with him.
Now, according to Ben Jacobs, Arsenal have made Alvarez their dream target for the summer transfer window.
It appears Arsenal are stepping up their efforts to sign him, as Sky Sports’ Luca Bendoni reports in a new update that the Gunners have held fresh talks with Atletico’s hierarchy to discuss the 26-year-old’s potential transfer to the Emirates Stadium.
Club-to-club talks
However, the report adds that there is a disparity between Atletico’s valuation of the Argentine international, who is also of keen interest to Barcelona.
Viktor Gyökeres and Gabriel are the recognised centre-forward options in Mikel Arteta’s ranks, with the versatile Kai Havertz also capable of leading the line when required.
Although Gyökeres endured a difficult start to his career at the Emirates Stadium, he gradually developed into one of Mikel Arteta’s most influential players, finishing as Arsenal’s leading scorer with 14 Premier League goals and 21 across all competitions.
Still, one notable lesson from Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain was the clear distinction between their opponents’ attack and theirs. The French champions lined up with the Ballon d’Or winner and the 2025 Golden Boy winner.
Hence, while Gyokers has been firing for the club, adding Alvarez, who will command a fee in excess of £110m plus bonuses, to their attack would be an ambitious statement of intent towards extending their dominance in domestic and European competitions next season.
