Arsenal preparing formal offer to sign Mikel Oyarzabal
Arsenal are preparing to submit a formal offer to sign Spanish centre-forward Mikel Oyarzabal from Real Sociedad this summer, according to Ekrem Konur.
Oyarzabal has been one of the standout performers for Spain in the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
He has netted four goals in the tournament and, most notably, scored a brace against Austria, becoming the first player to score twice in a knockout game for Spain since Emilio Butragueno against Denmark in the last 16 of the 1986 tournament.
Since the start of 2025, only Norway’s Erling Haaland (24) has netted more international goals among European players than Oyarzabal’s 17 in his last 19 starts.
His form for his country comes as no surprise following an outstanding goalscoring form at club level for Sociedad in the recently concluded campaign.
He enjoyed his best goalscoring campaign for the San Sebastián outfit last season, netting 15 goals in LaLiga while his total goal contributions for the club were 22 in all competitions.
Such a level of form for club and country will inevitably draw keen interest from several top clubs, including Arsenal.
However, it appears the Gunners are looking to steal a march on other interested clubs as Ekrem Konur claims that the Premier League champions are preparing to submit a formal offer to sign Oyarzabal this summer.
Oyarzabal to Arsenal
The Gunners decided to make a formal move after being impressed by his performances at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, according to the report.
However, Arsenal are set to face stern competition in the race for the 29-year-old, with Konur adding that Spanish giants Barcelona as well as clubs in Italy have also expressed interest in the Spaniard.
Arsenal currently have Viktor Gyökeres and Gabriel Jesus as their natural centre-forward options, while the versatile Kai Havertz has been a reliable presence in the position.
Despite a slow start to life at the Emirates, Gyökeres evolved into one of Mikel Arteta’s most important players, netting the most goals by an Arsenal player in the Premier League (14) and the most in all competitions (21).
Still, there remains a need for another centre-forward due to uncertainty over Gabriel Jesus’s future, whose contract will expire at the end of next season.
Should the Brazilian depart, Oyarzabal, valued at £21m by Transfermarkt, would be an experienced, prolific, tactically fitting option to replace Jesus in Arteta’s attack as he looks to sustain his side’s dominance in the league and Europe next season.
