Arsenal now eyeing move for RB Leipzig fullback Lutsharel Geertruida

By on July 13, 2026

Arsenal have expressed interest in signing RB Leipzig fullback Lutsharel Geertruida this summer, according to CaughtOffside.

Well before completing his move to RB Leipzig, Geertruida had already earned recognition as one of the Eredivisie’s finest right-backs following an impressive rise at Feyenoord.

His progression in Rotterdam began with a senior debut in October 2017. Within a matter of months, he had signed his first professional contract, become a cornerstone of the team and worn the captain’s armband on numerous occasions.

Before leaving Feyenoord, the defender had amassed 202 appearances, scored 24 goals and contributed 11 assists, performances that ultimately secured him a transfer to the Bundesliga.

His spell in Germany was relatively brief, however. After featuring 35 times for Leipzig, he completed a move to Sunderland last summer, where he established himself as one of the standout performers of the recently concluded Premier League season under Régis Le Bris.

Although he still has three years remaining on his contract with Leipzig, a permanent departure appears increasingly likely, with several clubs now monitoring his situation.

Among the clubs showing interest in Geertruida is Arsenal, according to CaughtOffside, which claims that the north London club have expressed interest in signing the 25-year-old.

Affordable option

The Premier League champions have shortlisted the Dutchman among their right-back options due to his experience and versatility as they look to bolster their squad ahead of next season’s demanding run of fixtures across the league and in Europe, according to the report.

It appears the Gunners could acquire the 6ft 1in fullback at a bargain price, as CaughtOffside adds that Mikel Arteta’s side could sign Geertruida for £21m this summer.

However, Arsenal are set to face stern competition for the Netherlands international’s signature from Premier League rivals Liverpool, who are keeping tabs on him ahead of a potential summer swoop, as per the report.

Currently, Ben White and Jurrien Timber are the right-back options at Arteta’s disposal, while last summer’s signing, Cristhian Mosquera, has been deployed there several times.

Still, there remains a need for a new right-back due to White’s uncertain future at the Emirates, while Mosquera’s displays when deployed there suggest he is better suited to centre-back.

As such, Geertruida fits the mould of an archetypal Arteta fullback due to his defensive solidity and ability to play in multiple positions.

Aside from his qualities, his £21m valuation is also a good fee, and Arsenal will need to act swiftly to avoid being trumped by Liverpool.
