Arsenal now eyeing move for Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Arsenal have identified West Ham United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka as a ‘genuine option’ to bolster their backline this summer, according to TEAMtalk.
Wan-Bissaka came to the limelight through the ranks at Crystal Palace, where he made 46 appearances for the first team. His solid defensive displays earned him a move to Manchester United in the summer of 2019.
At Old Trafford, the fullback was one of the most combative right-backs in the Premier League and came out on top in notable contests against some of the best wingers, including Wilfred Zaha, Raheem Sterling, Sadio Mané, and Heung-min Son.
However, while his defensive game was unquestionable, he was usually found wanting in attack under Erik ten Hag’s possession-based system.
This led to his departure to West Ham, where he has maintained his reputation despite the Hammers’ disappointing campaign last season.
Now, according to TEAMtalk, Arsenal are exploring the market for a new right-back and have now identified Wan-Bissaka as a ‘genuine option’.
‘Genuine option’
While Ben White’s injury towards the end of last season has raised doubts about an immediate departure, there remains an expectation that the Englishman could leave the Emirates Stadium this summer amid keen interest in his signature, as per the report.
As a result, the report adds that the club are now looking to add a new right-back to compete with Jurrien Timber, with the club’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, carrying out an extensive search that includes Wan-Bissaka.
However, the Congolese is not the only option Arsenal are looking at, with TEAMtalk adding that Arsenal also have a long list of other options, including Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa, Barcelona’s Jules Koundé, Real Madrid’s Raúl Asensio, Celta Vigo’s Oscar Mingueza, RB Leipzig’s Lutsharel Geertruida, Roma’s Wesley, Monaco’s Vanderson, Feyenoord’s Givairo Read, Sporting CP’s Ivan Fresneda, and Newcastle’s Tino Livramento.
The London-born Congolese international has earned a reputation as one of the best 1v1 defenders not just in the Premier League but across Europe.
Tottenham Hotspur attacker James Maddison described him as ‘ridiculously good at 1 v 1 defending’, while Arsenal legend Martin Keown described him as a ‘magnificent defender’.
However, with five years running on his contract at the London Stadium, signing Wan Bissaka would come at a steep fee, as West Ham will likely demand a fee well above his £12m Transfermarkt valuation.
