Arsenal interested in signing ex-Inter Milan star Sommer
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing former Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer, as per TEAMtalk.
After spending a long time with Borussia Mönchengladbach, the 37-year-old joined Bayern Munich for a very brief spell. Still, he won the Bundesliga title at the Allianz Arena.
Upon joining the Nerazzurri in 2023, the Swiss enjoyed a great spell, winning two Serie A titles and a few domestic cup competitions. He even helped the Italian giants reach the Champions League final before losing to Paris Saint-Germain.
However, he has decided to leave Giuseppe Meazza Stadium as a free agent this summer. Now, TEAMtalk claim that Arsenal are exploring the possibility of signing a new goalkeeper as Kepa Arrizabalaga wants to leave to play regularly.
The Spaniard joined from AFC Bournemouth to support David Raya and mainly featured in domestic cup competitions last term, helping Arsenal reach the EFL Cup final before losing to Manchester City.
Arsenal have identified Illan Meslier as the primary target but are also interested in Sommer. Moreover, the North London club have earmarked Mathew Ryan as a potential option.
It appears Mikel Arteta’s side don’t want to spend any transfer fee for a backup goalkeeper; as a result, they have been exploring the free agent market.
Sommer to Arsenal
Sommer has the highest pedigree among Arsenal’s targets, but he is in the twilight of his career. Therefore, Mikel Arteta may prefer to pursue a younger option.
Like Raya, Sommer isn’t the tallest goalkeeper; still, he has enjoyed great success at the highest level over the years. So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they sign him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure Sommer’s service before the start of next season.
Meanwhile, apart from bolstering the last line of defence, Arsenal have been working to reinforce the left flank and midfield departments. Moreover, Arteta wants a new centre-forward.
Morgan Rogers is said to be Arsenal’s primary target for the left flank, while Alex Scott, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Bruno Guimarães have been suggested as midfield targets. On the other hand, the Emirates club are interested in signing Julian Alvarez to bolster the No.9 position.
