Arsenal in fierce battle to sign Mainz’s Kaishu Sano

By on June 30, 2026

Arsenal are reportedly in a fierce battle to sign Mainz midfielder Kaishu Sano, as per a recent report.

Since moving to MEWA Arena from the Japanese side, Kashima Antlers, a couple of years ago, the 25-year-old has established himself as a key starter.

He showcased his qualities in the Bundesliga last term, making five goal contributions in 46 appearances across all competitions. Moreover, he helped his side finish in mid-table.

Having proven his worth in club football, Sano has secured his place in the Japan national team’s starting line-up, helping his side reach the World Cup last-32 before losing to Brazil.

Sano scored the opening goal against Carlo Ancelotti’s side before they mounted a brilliant comeback, courtesy of goals from Casemiro and Gabriel Martinelli.

Now, as per a recent report (via TEAMtalk), Sano’s recent eye-catching performances haven’t gone unnoticed, as he has been attracting a lot of attention in this window.

Arsenal have been keeping a close eye on him and could make a concrete approach over the coming weeks. However, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Borussia Dortmund are also in this race. The Reds are even ‘showing strong interest’ in finalising the operation.

Sano to Arsenal

Amid growing interest in the 25-year-old, Mainz might be open to cashing-in on him. However, with the player’s existing deal set to run until 2028, they are in a strong position to demand a big fee and want up to £52m.

Sano is comfortable in the defensive midfield and box-to-box roles. He is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, and works hard without possession.

After Christian Norgaard failed to break into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up last term, Arsenal are said to be considering purchasing a new midfielder.

Therefore, they have been linked with a host of names, with Alex Scott, Bruno Guimarães and Ayyoub Bouaddi being among them. But Sano is emerging as a new target.

The Japanese is a talented player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services.
