Arsenal open talks to sign Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes
Arsenal have reportedly opened talks to sign Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes, as per the Daily Mail.
Since moving to St James’ Park from Olympique Lyonnais, the 28-year-old has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, helping his side win the Carabao Cup last year.
Although he struggled with fitness problems last term, he showcased his productivity, scoring nine goals and registering seven assists in 41 appearances across all competitions.
Having proven his worth in club football, the midfielder has secured his place in the Brazil national team’s starting line-up, helping his country reach the World Cup knockout stage.
Now, the Daily Mail report that, despite winning the Premier League title last term, Arsenal are keen to upgrade several areas of the squad this summer, with the engine room one of the priorities.
The Gunners have been monitoring numerous targets and have identified Guimaraes as a serious option after being impressed by his recent eye-catching performances.
Arsenal have already held talks with the player’s representatives to persuade him to join, with the South American not desperate to leave the Tyneside club.
Guimaraes to Arsenal
However, with the Brazilian, valued at around £60m by Transfermarkt, set to enter the final two years of his current contract, his representatives have arrived in the UK to gauge the market.
The report state that alongside Guimaraes, Arsenal are also interested in Morgan Rogers, but Aston Villa have slapped a whopping £100m price tag on his head.
Guimaraes, standing at 6ft tall, is comfortable in the deep-lying playmaker and box-to-box roles. He is quick, strong, good in the air, and efficient in playing threading passes between the lines.
Moreover, he is excellent at taking set-pieces, can take penalties, and is efficient in defensive contributions. Guimaraes is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career.
Therefore, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium during this offseason.
