Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Athletic Club forward Nico Williams, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The 23-year-old started his youth career at Pamplona before spending a very brief spell with Osasuna. He joined the Lions’ academy at the age of 11. He made his first-team debut for Athletic Club in 2021 before establishing himself as a talismanic figure in recent years.

Williams came into the spotlight having displayed impressive performances during the 2023/24 campaign, scoring eight goals and registering 16 assists across all competitions. He even helped his side win the Copa del Rey trophy.

During the summer of 2024, the forward guided Spain to win the European Championship by defeating France and England in the semi-final and final, respectively.

Williams even showed glimpses of his qualities during the 2024/25 season, making 18 goal contributions in all tournaments. However, he displayed inconsistent performances due to fitness problems last term.

Still, he has been selected for the Spanish national team for this summer’s World Cup. Now, Fichajes state that despite Williams’s recent dip in form, he isn’t short of potential suitors ahead of the summer window.

Arsenal are keen on purchasing him following Gabriel Martinelli’s poor performances last term, while Leandro Trossard is set to turn 32 later this year.

However, Manchester United and Liverpool are also interested in him, with the Reds exploring options to finally replace Luis Diaz. On the other hand, United want a new winger to create competition for Matheus Cunha.

Although the 23-year-old recently signed a long-term contract until 2035 at Athletic Club, he is ready to leave this summer to take the next step in his career, with the Premier League his preferred destination.

Despite Williams’s recent fitness problems, he is a highly talented left-winger. He still has plenty of time on his side to turn the situation around.

Williams, valued at around £34m by Transfermarkt, possesses the necessary physical attributes to flourish in the Premier League. So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services this summer.
