Arsenal eye move to sign Real Sociedad’s Jon Martín
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Real Sociedad defender Jon Martín, as per a recent report.
After coming through the Basque club’s youth system, the 20-year-old initially joined Beasain on loan to play regularly and develop his career. He made his first team debut for Real Sociedad in 2024 before establishing himself as a key starter last term.
In 32 appearances across all competitions, the youngster scored twice and kept four clean sheets. Moreover, he helped his side win the Copa del Rey by defeating Atletico Madrid in the final.
Now, as per a recent report (via TEAMtalk), Arsenal have registered their interest in Martin after monitoring his development closely last campaign.
However, the Gunners will have to overcome fierce competition to seal the deal as Aston Villa, Barcelona, and Los Rojiblancos are in this race as well.
Unai Emery’s side are even prepared to launch a formal £21m proposal to seal the deal. However, Real Sociedad have no intention of letting him leave for anything less than £43m, with his existing deal set to run until 2031.
Martin is a 6ft 1in tall right-footed centre-back. He is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions.
Martin to Arsenal
Arsenal currently have William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Cristhian Mosquera as options to deploy in the centre-back positions. Moreover, Jurrien Timber, Ben White, Riccardo Calafiori, and Piero Hincapié can provide cover in this position if needed.
However, White has struggled with fitness problems in recent years and is set to remain sidelined for several months due to a serious knee problem.
On the other hand, Calafiori has been linked with a move to Real Madrid. So, it appears Arsenal have started exploring options to sign a new defender.
Martin is a talented player and possesses high potential. So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services in this summer transfer window.
