Arsenal showing ‘genuine interest’ in signing Rafael Leao from AC Milan
Arsenal have been offered the chance to sign AC Milan winger Rafael Leão this summer, according to CaughtOffside.
Leão’s most recent campaign was far from his most productive, with the Portuguese winger managing just 10 goals and three assists, a clear decline when compared with the 25 goal involvements he registered in 2023/24 and the 29 he produced in 2022/23.
The winger also faced criticism for both his performances and incidents off the pitch, which contributed to his falling out of favour with former manager Massimiliano Allegri and sections of the AC Milan support. On several occasions, he was even jeered by supporters, including during a match against Atalanta BC earlier in the season, and again after a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Udinese Calcio in April, alongside other tense moments involving teammate Christian Pulisic.
That growing pressure has now prompted the winger to express his desire for ‘a new chapter’ away from Milan, with interest from several clubs building ahead of the next transfer window.
Now, according to CaughtOffside, Arsenal are exploring potential left wingers in the transfer window and have been approached by Leão’s representatives to offer his availability.
‘Genuine interest’
In a boost to the Gunners, Milan are open to offers for the 26-year-old between £43-51m, although they will also have to battle with Manchester United for his signature, as per the report.
However, CaughtOffside clarifies that while Leão is now Arsenal’s priority target, they do hold a ‘genuine interest’ in the Portuguese international and are being kept informed of his situation should a market opportunity arise.
Despite registering a relatively modest 13 goal contributions last season, Leão still ranked strongly across several metrics, reinforcing belief in his elite-level potential.
During the recently concluded campaign, the winger posted an 83.7% pass completion rate, created 23 chances, and showed real quality in launching transitions, completing 77.8% of his long balls.
However, his defensive contribution remained limited, with only 18 defensive actions recorded for Milan last season, which has raised questions about how well he would fit into Mikel Arteta’s high-intensity system at Arsenal.
With over two months left until the summer transfer window closes in September, there’ll be several left-wingers in the market, and it’ll be interesting to see which of the options the Gunners will sign heading into the new campaign.
