Arsenal plotting bold swoop to sign Tijjani Reijnders from Man City
Arsenal are keeping tabs on Manchester City midfielder Tijjani Reijnders ahead of a potential move to the Emirates Stadium next summer, according to TEAMtalk.
Following an exceptional campaign with AC Milan that saw him receive the Serie A Midfielder of the Year accolade, Reijnders arrived at the Etihad in the summer with enormous expectations surrounding him.
However, the season has not progressed as anticipated for the 27-year-old, whose influence within the squad has gradually diminished over time.
Since February, Reijnders has steadily slipped down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola. The midfielder has started only one of City’s last 12 Premier League games and has been an unused substitute in nine games in that run.
That considerable decline in playing time has inevitably intensified speculation regarding a possible exit during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Despite the reduction in minutes, it is important to note that Reijnders has still contributed seven goals and eight assists across all competitions, suggesting he continues to possess the ability to make a meaningful impact.
Now, according to TEAMtalk, Reijnders could depart the Etihad Stadium this summer, and several clubs, including Arsenal, are keeping tabs on the situation.
Depth
The report adds that the north London club have shortlisted the 27-year-old among their summer targets, citing him as a viable midfield option to add depth to Mikel Arteta’s squad.
While the deal is not advanced yet, there’s an expectation that the deal could be revisited as Andrea Berta looks to improve Arteta’s squad to navigate next season’s fixture schedule, as per the report.
Amid keen interest from the Gunners, TEAMtalk adds that City are looking to recoup the fee they paid to sign him last summer and are open to offers around £45m for the Dutchman.
However, Arsenal are set to face stiff competition from Juventus, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United, who are also eyeing a summer swoop for the Netherlands international, according to the report.
Arsenal have done business with City in recent years, with both Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko arriving in the summer of 2022.
Should a deal be agreed for Reijnders, he could prove to be a viable addition to the Gunners’ midfield, offering the manager a profile similar to Mikel Merino, as he can operate in deeper positions and can also offer a goalscoring threat upfront.
