Arsenal are reportedly planning to launch an ambitious swoop to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, as per a recent Italian report.

After moving to St James’ Park from AC Milan for a substantial fee in 2023, the 26-year-old failed to make a meaningful impact during his debut campaign, as he was suspended for almost a year after being found guilty of breaching betting regulations.

However, the Italian displayed impressive performances last term, helping his side win the Carabao Cup by defeating Arsenal and Liverpool in the semi-final and final, respectively.

This was the Magpies’ first trophy triumph in almost seven decades. Moreover, he guided Eddie Howe’s side to qualify for the Champions League.

Although Newcastle have displayed inconsistent performances this season, Tonali has showcased his qualities, making nine goal contributions across all competitions.

Now, as per a recent Italian report (via The Mirror), Tonali could leave Newcastle this summer to take the next step in his career, and Arsenal have expressed their interest in signing him.

The Gunners were heavily linked with a move for Tonali during the final days of the winter window. However, the Tyneside club refused to let him leave in mid-season.

But Newcastle might be open to cashing-in on him this summer if they receive a proposal worth around £87m, with his existing deal set to run until 2029.

The report claim that Arsenal will have to overcome fierce competition to seal the deal as Manchester United are also keen on him and are currently leading the race.

Tonali is comfortable playing in the deep-lying playmaker position and the box-to-box role. He is extremely quick, technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, and has an eye for scoring goals from distance.

Moreover, he is efficient in switching the play and works hard without possession. He is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services in the upcoming summer transfer window.
