Arsenal plotting audacious swoop to sign Sandro Tonali
Arsenal are plotting an audacious swoop to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali next summer, according to Football Insider.
The Gunners’ brilliant campaign this season can be attributed to the execution of Mikel Arteta’s exceptional tactical nous by his players, including the summer signings.
They were one of the league’s heavy spenders last summer, with Andrea Berta at the heart of things, ensuring the manager had enough depth capable of contending on both domestic and European fronts.
In midfield, Eberechi Eze, Martin Zubimendi, and Christian Nørgaard were added, and the trio has proved to be good value for money, although Nørgaard has played a reduced role this campaign.
Still, he has proven reliable whenever called upon, especially during Arsenal’s injury-hampered festive period, when he also operated at centre-back.
However, his performance against Southampton in the FA Cup drew much criticism, while Zubimendi’s form has slightly deteriorated, and understandably so, due to the fact that he has played 4,178 minutes of football in all competitions.
As such, there is a clear need for adequate depth in the middle in the case of injury or fatigue, and it’s no surprise the Ginners are eyeing more capable players for that role.
Now, according to Football Insider, Newcastle’s underwhelming performance from this campaign has led to uncertainties about Tonali’s future, leading to interest from several Premier League clubs.
Ambitious swoop
One of the clubs looking to sign the 26-year-old is Arsenal, as per the report, which claims that the Premier League leaders have expressed interest in signing the tenacious midfielder in the summer.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Pete O’Rourke confirmed the Gunners’ interest, saying.
‘There’s been talk of interest from Arsenal, and we all know that there is going to be interest from clubs in his native Italy as well, but they will struggle to afford to sign him right now.’
However, with his deal at St James’ Park running until 2028, a deal won’t be easy, with the report adding that the North Londoners will need to cough up at least £80m to sign the Italian in the summer.
Pete O’Rourke added, ‘(Newcastle will) be looking for £80 million plus for Sandro Tonali, maybe even more, looking at some of the other midfielders that have moved in the Premier League in recent seasons.’
With Arsenal reaching the final of three of the four competitions they’ve played this season, adding more quality players like Tonali would ensure they consistently extend their level of dominance beyond the current season.
