Arsenal ‘remain attentive’ to sign Roma’s Wesley Franca
Arsenal reportedly ‘remain attentive’ to a move for AS Roma defender Wesley Franca, as per TEAMtalk.
The Gunners currently have Jurrien Timber and Ben White as options to deploy in the right-back position. However, the former Brighton and Hove Albion star has struggled with fitness problems in recent years and picked up a fresh injury against West Ham United last weekend.
On the other hand, Timber has been out due to a muscular problem over the last few weeks. As a result, Mikel Arteta has used Cristhian Mosquera, who is a centre-back by trait, in the right-back position.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that Arsenal are considering signing a new right-sided defender and ‘remain attentive’ to a move for Wesley after being impressed by his recent promising performances.
Apart from the North London club, Liverpool are also planning to reinforce the right-back position and ‘appreciate’ the Brazilian’s profile and versatility.
On the other hand, Everton and Newcastle United are also keen on the South American, but the player wants to play in the European competition. So, he doesn’t want to join the Toffees or the Magpies this summer.
Having moved to Stadio Olimpico from Brazilian side Flamengo last summer, Wesley, valued at around £35m by Transfermarkt, still has a contract until 2030. So, the Giallorossi aren’t in any rush to sell him this year.
Wesley to Arsenal
Wesley is an attack-minded right-back but is also comfortable in the RWB position. Furthermore, he can provide cover on the opposite side if needed.
The South American is quick, technically sound, and is efficient in defensive contributions. In 38 appearances across all competitions, he has made six goal contributions and kept 10 clean sheets this term.
Wesley is a highly talented player and isn’t a finished article yet. So, the 22-year-old would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Meanwhile, following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League, Arsenal are set to face Burnley this weekend.
