Arsenal are leading the race to sign exciting Belgian winger Mika Godts from Ajax in the summer, according to Fichajes.

Ajax has, for several decades, produced some of the most exciting talents in football that have gone on to make undeniable marks in their careers. In recent years, the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, and David Neres have all moved to major clubs across Europe, where they’re currently making an impact.

The latest gem the club have unearthed is Godts, who could also be on the move this summer, with several clubs showing interest.

The left winger began his career in Belgium, where he progressed through the ranks at Anderlecht and Genk before joining Ajax in January 2023. He has gone on to make over 100 appearances for the Dutch giants.

In the current campaign, he has been Ajax’s standout performer, netting 17 goals and providing 14 assists in all competitions. He recently made headlines after scoring an incredible Puskas-worthy solo goal from his own half in Ajax’s 2-0 win over NAC Breda, a goal that put him further in the spotlight of several clubs.

One of the clubs looking to sign Godts is Arsenal, according to Fichajes, which reports that the UEFA Champions League finalists have set their sights on the 20-year-old as a transfer target for next summer.

Leandro Trossard replacement?

While Spanish giants Barcelona are also interested, the Gunners are leading the race to sign the winger and have intensified their efforts to closely monitor him, having identified his qualities as a perfect fit for Mikel Arteta’s attack, the report adds.

The Spanish outlet adds that, following initial enquiries in recent weeks, the Premier League leaders are optimistic that Godts would be open to a move to the Emirates, with the club looking to leverage their financial strength to meet the player’s demands and accelerate the deal.

However, with a contract at the Johan Cruyff Arena running until 2029, Ajax are expected to demand a significant fee, and it’s no surprise that Fichajes claims the Eredivisie giants will only listen to offers close to £64m for their prized asset.

Despite having at least two natural left wingers in the squad, there’s a clear need for a more prolific winger to provide equal goal threat and creativity as Bukayo Saka on the right.

Godts would undoubtedly be a good option for that role, especially given that Leandro Trossard faces an uncertain future beyond the current campaign at Arsenal.
